 General Information

This support note provides information on creating a new replica of a database from the Domino server and performing manual replication of it when required. The steps and screenshots shown below refer to Lotus Notes 9.0.1. If you are using an earlier version of Lotus Notes some of the steps may be slightly different.

 Solution

Create a new local replica
To create a new replica of a database open the database from the Domino server in the Lotus Notes client. Once opened select 'File' from the Lotus Notes menu bar, then select 'Replication' and then 'New Replica' (see following image)

The Create Replica dialog box will now be displayed. Check the following settings:
  • Server: ensure the Server is set to 'Local'
  • File Path: You can accept the default file path shown for the file or specify an alternative path.
  • Encrypt Replica: we recommend de-selecting this option so that database is accessible from multiple Lotus Notes ID's

Once you've confirmed all the settings click the Ok button. A replica of the database will now be created locally in the Lotus Notes client.

Manually replicating the local replica with the Domino server
To manually replicate a local database with its corresponding replica on the Domino server you should first locate it on the Lotus Notes workspace. If the Lotus Notes Workspace is not already opened click the 'Open' option near the upper left-hand corner of the Lotus Notes screen, then select Applications, and then Workspace.

Once the Workspace has been opened locate the icon for the database you would like to replicate.

Click the dropdown arrow in the top right-hand corner of the database icon. A popup menu will open showing the locations of each replica of the database. Make sure the 'Local' option has been selected

Right mouse click on the database icon and select 'Replication -> Replicate'

You can choose to replicate the database via the background Replicator - in which case the database is replicated with the Domino server it was last replicated with and you can continue to use the Lotus Notes client while the replication is being performed. If you choose 'Replicate with options' (recommended) you can select the Domino server to replicate with and view the results of the replication.

Select the 'Replicate with options' option then click the Ok button. Make sure the shown server is correct for the Domino server you would like to replicate with (click the dropdown arrow if necessary to change the server name) then click the Ok button.

After the replication has completed the summary results will be shown.

Setting up scheduled replication
Replication can be setup to be automatically performed on a regular basis. Scheduled replication is enabled via the Lotus Notes Location document. Click the location shown in the lower right-hand corner of the Lotus Notes screen then select 'Edit Locations' from the popup menu.

The currently active location will be automatically selected. Click the Edit button below the list of location names:

When the location settings have loaded click on the Replication tab. The following settings should now be shown:

Make the following changes:
  • Click the checkbox next to 'Replication is enabled for this location'
  • Click the checkbox next to 'Replication Interval'
  • Set the repeat minutes and days to your preferred values.

Click the Ok button when you have finished making changes.

Replication will now be automatically performed regularly on the schedule you specified.
